Wall on Turlough

Drystone Wall

Sometime the fact that the Burren is covered in walls comes in very handy, like when a sudden downpour sweeps through during an October walk. Animals and hikers alike can huddle in shelter till the storm blows through. On some hills in the Burren one can see high walls laid out in a cross shape. This is to ensure that there is one sheltered corner for sheep or cattle regardless of what way the wind is blowing.
