Alpine Gentians

The Alpine Gentian has become the icon of the Burren. These incredibly blue, star-shaped flowers appear in April and May where the grass is short. These were photographed on May1st 2004 on Slieve Carran near the cairn there. At that time of the year, there are gentians all across that high plateau; well worth the climb up.
